Buck shakes his head, smiling as he drives the screw home. “Nope. Something better. I hope.”
And then he reaches into a bag on the counter, takes out a small clipboard with a pen attached on a string and places it on the hook.
“So, uh,” Buck says, “I was at Skylight Books last week, looking for that new book on Mars for Chris, and they had these little checklist notepads. Some of them were practical, like grocery lists or chore charts, but that's sort of boring and we don't really need them anyway, and some of them were more silly or fun, like affirmations or funny 'take a message' pads. I looked at them for a while but none of them really seemed to fit so I – uh, made my own.”
Eddie peers at the clipboard, where a simple but well-designed checklist offers praise for a variety of things, from 'finishing your homework' to 'changing the sheets' to 'being there when I needed you.'
Eddie looks up at Buck. “This is – all in Spanish.”
